Functional morphology studies the connections between morphological features and their environmental, physical, and ecological surroundings. Employing geometric morphometrics and modelling, we explore the functional links between body form and trophic patterns within a tropical demersal marine fish assemblage, conjecturing that shape characteristics can offer partial insights into fish trophic levels. Fish populations in the area encompassing the continental shelf of northeast Brazil (4-9°S) were sampled. Fish samples underwent analysis, yielding a distribution across 14 orders, 34 families, and 72 species. Photographs of each individual, taken from the side, detailed 18 body landmarks. The principal component analysis (PCA) of morphometric indices showed that fish body elongation and fin base shape were the chief contributing factors to the variation in fish morphology.
